Lisbon with Sintra treated as a real day

A four-night Lisbon guide built around Alfama mornings, a proper Sintra day, river light, and hotels that keep the hills from wearing you down.

Lisbon cityscape in Portugal

Lisbon cityscape in Portugal

Lisbon feels easy until the hills start making decisions for you. The city is generous, sunny, and walkable in theory, but the best trip respects the slope, the light, and the fact that Sintra deserves its own day.

A strong Lisbon stay uses the river as a reference point. Alfama is best early, Chiado and Bairro Alto work well for evenings, and Avenida da Liberdade makes sense when hotel comfort matters more than romantic cobblestones.

Four nights gives the city enough room: two Lisbon days, one Sintra day, and one slower river or food-led day without turning the trip into a staircase contest.

At a Glance

Best length

Four nights, with one dedicated Sintra day.

Best months

April to June or September to October.

Best base

Chiado for first-timers, Avenida da Liberdade for comfort, Alfama for atmosphere if stairs are not a problem.

Airport logic

LIS is close to the city, but arrival traffic and hill luggage still matter.

Choose comfort before romance

Lisbon's prettiest streets can be hard work with luggage, heat, and late dinners. A hotel near Chiado or Avenida da Liberdade often makes the trip feel more premium than a cramped room deep in the steepest part of Alfama.

Bairro Alto Hotel is strong for a central, polished stay. Valverde Hotel gives Avenida calm without losing city access. Palacio Principe Real works when garden, design, and a quieter hilltop base matter.

Give Alfama the morning

Alfama is best before the day becomes hot and crowded. Walk it early, keep the plan loose, and let the viewpoints, tiles, and small streets carry the morning.

Do not turn it into a tram chase. The tram is charming, but Lisbon is better when the route is designed around walking downhill, stopping often, and knowing when to call the car.

Do Sintra properly or skip it

Sintra deserves a real day. Pena Palace, gardens, mist, and hills do not combine well with a rushed afternoon after a late Lisbon lunch.

Go early with a driver or a very clear transport plan. Pick fewer sites and leave before the return becomes the worst part of the day.

Use the river for the final day

A last Lisbon day works well along the river: Belem, MAAT, a long lunch, or a ferry moment if the weather is kind.

The city does not need a grand finale. Its best ending is usually light on water, a final dinner, and a hotel close enough that the walk home still feels good.

Sintra

Leave early, pick fewer sites, and return before the day becomes a transport problem.

Day 4

River and Belem

Use the river, Belem, and a long lunch to finish the trip with space.
